The Philadelphia 76ers signed LeBron James yesterday.
This made a huge splash around the NBA, and even bigger here in my hometown.
But there’s a lesson in it for every business owner:
Winners wanna win.
LeBron is the definition of an A-Player, and A-Players all share one driving trait.
They’ll do anything to win: Relentless preparation, focus, training, & execution.
But they also know it’s a team game. As good as they are on their own, they need to surround themselves with other A-Players.
Which is exactly what LeBron did, joining a Sixers roster they’ve stacked with a few big moves lately.
And here’s the tell: it wasn’t about the money.
LeBron made $52M in 2025. He signed with the Sixers for $4M, the veteran league minimum.
The last time he made $4M was his rookie season, 23 years ago.
So why do it? Because for a guy like him, money is no longer the driving force.
He wants to win, and he wants to do it with the right teammates, the right leadership, and the greatest fans in the world 🙂
A-Players attract other A-Players. It’s a magnet.
So take a hard look at your own team right now. Honestly grade every person:
- A - this person is special
- B - this person is reliable
- C - this person is just…there
For years my company was heavy on B’s and C’s, because honestly, that’s all I could find.
Then I learned how to actually identify and hire A’s, and the difference in performance and attitude blew me away.
It raised the bar, not only in my company but in my own standards. I started turning down people I would’ve hired in a heartbeat a year earlier, because I wasn’t settling anymore.
Today we’re stacked with A-Players, and we’re seeing that same LeBron effect. We’re landing talented people who want to be here, and some have even taken a ‘guaranteed pay’ cut to join us.
So learn what you can from LeBron and the Sixers, and go take a hard look at your bench.
If you want to skip the years of trial and error and just copy my hiring and retention system, I can help you do exactly that.
I’ve got 5 spots left before we close on July 31st.
