In 2019, I could drive to every shop I owned within 45 minutes.
I believed my success was due to my hands-on management
And that we’d fail if I couldn't visit in person.
I had quite the ego!
That fear of failure kept me from buying stores outside my comfort radius.
I even turned down a deal 75 minutes away that generates $10M+ revenue per year for someone else.
Eventually, I realized other owners operated more stores, further apart, at higher volume than mine.
If they can do it, why not me?
So in 2021 I pushed myself to buy stores 90 minutes away
I knew that I couldn’t visit those shops every day but I had a simple solution: hire District Managers who could visit every day.
And those DM’s would be responsible for holding the stores to my standard level of performance
While the distance created some new problems, it was nothing we couldn’t solve.
The next year I bought 5 more stores, 90 minutes away in another direction.
Ultimately, expanding into these new markets didn’t require any more education, money, or experience.
They required me to get out of my own head.
I’ve found the gap between where you are and where you want to be usually isn't information.
It’s clarity + confidence + execution.
