Make it easy to understand

As a business grows, we tend to overcomplicate everything.

  • Training manuals nobody reads.
  • Bonus plans nobody fully understands.
  • Scorecards with so many numbers your head will spin

That just doesn’t work.

Instead, we need to do the opposite: simplify everything

Make it so easy that new people can get up to speed quickly.

  • Quick training videos + bullet-point checklist
  • Bonus plan they can calculate on a napkin
  • Scorecards with a few numbers colored green/yellow/red

Your team knows exactly what success looks like.

They should know what failure looks like too.

They should know what they own and what they’re accountable for.

With this new “less is more” strategy, ask yourself the 80/20 question:

What 20% do they need to learn to master 80% of the job?

In my auto repair business, the 20% is our PHONE SCRIPTS

We have 3 phone scripts that cover 80% of the calls we get.

It would be a waste to waterboard new employees with the 50+ unique situations that people may call about.

No thanks.

We’ll spend that time mastering the 3 biggies and deal with the curveballs as they come.

Where in your business are you overcomplicating it?

What can you eliminate or simplify?

Let me know. I read every reply.

Cheers!

Brian
